In 1966 I met Joe Kane from Mattapan at the Surf Nantasket, a dance Mecca, for teenagers on the South Shore of Boston. Her bouffant was lacquered stiff as a football helmet by Aquanet hair spray. Once a week we went to the Mattapan Oriental theater for the matinee to make out in the balcony. The touch and smell of her hair was so memorable, but we drifted apart and became hippies in the 1960s.
The Surf Nantasket featured house bands such as the Techniques and Pilgrims as well as Top Ten groups like the Turtles and Shocking Blue. Even the Doors played at the Surf. My favorite was the Rockin’ Ramroads.
