Pattaya and Jomtien are not the only beaches on the Eastern Seaboard, although I’d bet that more than half the bar farangs coming to Pattaya have never touched the sand on the beach, unless it was to get a sexual favor from a ka-toey working the Beach Road. The number is probably greater than half. More like 90%.
Their excuses range from the dirty water, the heat, fat Russians, beach vendors, jet-skies, sunburns, hang-overs, and plain laziness.
I have to admit I don’t go swimming off Pattaya.
Jomtien gets a miss too on most days.
I’ve driven the entire coast to Satthahip without finding a beach as nice as those on Koh Lann, however I don’t mind going to some beaches for other reasons and one of them in Ban Amphur.
This small fishing village is about 16 klicks south of Pattaya. Many of its houses are wooden and if someone ever wanted to make it into a tourist trap, they’d have themselves a goldmine. How is has resisted speculative development is a miracle.
On the weekends Bangkokians come to dine on seafood. The appeal of each restaurant depends on the availability of parking. I have my favorite. It’s unassuming, but the rock lobsters are delicious. I have no idea of the name despite having askeed the owner several times. It’s across from the marine supply store. I also buy my plah-muk hang or dried squid at the restaurant’s shop.
But Ban Amphur also has a beach.
Quiet, clean, and with a long walkway under sandy bluffs.
Great for watching the sunset with the love of your holiday.
Here’s my rating for Ban Amphur Beach
Beach rating (0-5) for each category
Cleanliness – 4.5
The town keeps the beach in tip-top shape.
Water Quality – 3
The water is murky, but in the morning clear.
Safety – 3
No jetskis, but there is a sharp drop off for kids
Beer and babe access – 4
BYOB but beer is available from vendors except for the long walk under the bluffs.
Food from the restaurants can be very good.
Total score = 14.5
