My friends ask me what’s happening in Thailand.
I can’t really say since I’m living in New York City.
A 26-hour plane ride away, but I have my opinions.
Thailand’s government is under siege from the unrelenting pressure of red-shirted Thaksin supporters. The PM has even suggested discussions with the deposed leader of Thai Rak Thai to end the incessant protests against the Democrat-led coalition. Mr. Thaksin remains in exile due to criminal charges of corruption having led to a conviction in absentia. He has not ruled out a return, for this drama is more a shadowy puppet show between two power factions within the Thai elite. Each side vying to protect their power bases; the elite wanting to elect officials by choice and the modernists who seek one man-one vote democracy.
Neither side trust the other and there is no middle.
Only the people, who wish for better times.
Prediction – More of the same with everything put on hold for Songkran.
Let there be ‘sanuk’.
