As a teenager my brother and I would drive after dances or concerts to Simco-at-the-Bridge outside Mattapan Square. This neon-lit landmark held the honor of serving the best foot-long hot dogs in Boston and did so 24 hours a day 365 days a year, so that an exiled family member could celebrate Christmas on a stool eating a hot dog or even fried clams. Not exactly cheery, but at least you were not alone and maybe got to see some fool overwrought by holiday cheer jump off the bridge. The drop guaranteed instant pain although not death, since the drop was only 20 feet.
A steady diet of Simco’s hot dogs was more deadly in the long run.
My doctor has cautioned against eating hot dogs.
“No more than once a month.”
And I obey his instructions, so today I ordered December’s hot dog from the stand next to the Fung Wah Bus Stop in New York’s Chinatown. 92 cents with tax brings the price to $1. Better than Pappaya Hut or Nathans or even Katz’s. Bigger too. I almost ate January’s limit too, but I’ll save it till 2009.
