ROCK & ROLL 1 & 2 are sports arena favorites after the home team has scored a goal. Few of the mob are aware that the genius behind this rock anthem is Gary Glitter or that the ex-glam rocker has been serving a 3 year prison sentence in Viet-Nam. The crime – child molestation.
The ageing rock star had previously served a 2 month jail term in his native England for possession of child pornography on this computer. He moved to Cambodia to escape the spotlight, only to be deported from that country under a cloud of accusations about his having sex with under-age children.
His next stop was Viet-Nam, but in November 2005 he left his house and attempted to book a flight to Bangkok. The police arrested him at the airport. Six girls had pressed charges that he had sex with them. Their ages ranged from 11 to 23. The age of consent in that country is eighteen. Gary Glitter was in trouble again.
The police investigators found no evidence of rape, although Mr. Glitter confessed to having slept with an 11 year-old girl. Luckily for Mr. Glitter, since child rape carries a mandatory death sentence. Instead he financially compensated the families and the parents asked the court to show leniency on lesser charges of committing obscene acts.
After a one-day trial the sentenced the offender to 3 years and Glitter served 2.
Mr. Glitter has, does, and will profess his innocence.
“To my knowledge I have not had sex with anyone under 18″. I know the line to cross and understand that having sex with children is a crime … I don’t have the words, I would be very angry about that.” Mr. Glitter said in a May 2006 BBC Interview.
After this interview the BBC was deluged by irate callers and emailers challenging Gary Glitter’s claims of no wrong-doing.
Even more rage was expressed after he announced his return to music in the Daily Telegraph.
“I have an incomplete album that I want to finish. I have been thinking about the plan during my days in jail, I have sung rock’n’roll for 40 years. After jail, I will continue to rock’n’roll.”
