There will always be an England although the England of the upper-classes is hardly visible to the masses other than in thoroughly boring films such ATONEMENT. Kiera Kingsley is gorgeous as is the English countryside, however Ian McEwan’s novel is a paean to those utterly useless aristocrats to which so many British aspire without any hope of being accepted into that heaven.
