Big Wave Thailand

The only two surfing spots on Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard are in Rayong.

Hinsuay Namsay – Rayong has a natural left hand wave, which only rises from May to Sept. If you’re lucky, very lucky, it could get to 4-5 feet. Mostly it’s knee-height, but can be pleasant as the warm water is clean and the Thaïs have fished all the sharks out of the Gulf to feed the Chinese tourists Shark-fin soup.

Mae Ram Phung – Rayong is another break with erratic wind-driven waves during the monsoon season. The best spot is toward the cape as it’s protected from the wind.

No surf doesn’t really matter, because I can’t surf.

I can paddle out to the break. I can sit on a board and chat about surf. I can even scratch the sea surface with my cupped hands in a vain attempt to catch a wave, but whenever I catch one, I’m either thrashed by a close-out or else hurtled to the shore belly-down on the surfboard with the energy of a spent wave.

I’m no surfer.

The surfers braving Maverick’s giant waves are surfers.

Copter rescue would still be looking ofr my drowned corpse.

I’m a lover not a surfer.
