Bookzine in Jomtien was having a sale last week and I was lucky to find EM Nathanson’s sequel to his 1965 hit THE DIRTY DOZEN.
A DIRTY DISTANT WAR takes Major John Reisman to SE Asia at the end of WWII. He travels to Burma, China, and Vietnam as an arms supplier to Ho Chi Minh, who is portrayed as a fierce nationalist willing to deal with all sides to win freedom from the French.
“Better to eat the French dung for 100 years than the Chinese dung for 1,000.”
The tale is based on the OSS’ exploits in Indochina and a good read, especially since the Major’s success ratio with a Burmese village girl, Chinese whore, Vietnam revolutionary, and French widow is 100%.
Better than John Wayne in THE GREEN BERETS.
If you find A DIRTY DISTANT WAR, buy it. Two thumbs up and two toes too.
