Penang in 1991 was a step into the modern world for any traveler leaving Sumatra. Paved roads were a welcome relief after a bone-grinding bus ride from Lake Toba. The streets were lined with sailor bars. Brothels lurked down dark alleys. Slim Chinese girls strolled by in high heels and their hot pants tempted everyone’s eyes. Muslim, Hindu, Westerner. Beer was cold and a gin n tonic at the old P&O Hotel cost three rupiahs. 

The 1997 ripped the heart on this old peninsular city and the Thailiban policy of not issuing B or O visas from Asian embassy relegated Penag to a backwater for the last two years, however the Thai government has announced the resumption of multi-entry O Visas to farangs from the Royal Thai Consulate in Penang.

Thai Rak Thai may be gone, but Thai Rak Farang is back again. 

Best way to get there from Pattaya is via Air Asia.

Have a Pattaya travel agent arrange the visa with the local in Penang.

Save yourself time and instead of waiting for your passport, take the funicular to the top of Penang and walk in the clouds on gangways running through the jungle panopy. Avoid the pubs and drink in the old bars along Chulia Street, since you can annoy the backpackers with tales of debauchery. Nobody in Pattaya cares what you do other than your girlfriend and that’s only ebcause tahi women are naturally jealous of everything.

Even beer.

Penang is a break from all that.

Quiet, but after a year in Pattaya who doesn’t need  a little peace and quiet.
