This weekend Bangkok’s Dome restaurant atop State Tower will be the setting for one of the most luxurious dinners in recent history. Places for the 11-course banquet can be had for a million baht or $29,000 and so far 15 guests have reserved a seat at the table. Six international chefs from around the world will be preparing the various courses with which vintage wines will be served.
No Merlots or Chardonnays, which would disappoint my father.
The object of the dinner is to hail Bangkok as a world-class epicurean destination for billionaires rather than sun-starved Russians, pot-smoking backpackers and lust-deprived farangs. Better one person spending a million baht in an evening than a budget holiday-maker’s miserly 4000 baht a day.
Class comes first for noblesse oblige a table.

Not a single Thai dish is on the menu.

Back in 1982 Nigger Kali the Ear-Ripper, the Reeperbahn’s most powerful pimp, celebrated his 27th birthday with 27 guests eating 27 courses over 27 hours at Hamburg’s#1 restaurant.

Msot of it is true.
I was working at Kali’s nightclub, BSIR’s on Eppenndorfer Weg. He invited the DJ and me for the party’s last hours. Entering the restaurant was like walking into a dissolute remake of Viscounti’s THE DAMNED.
Only Kali hadn’t let anyone leave or do drugs.
His wish was everyone’s command.
After all he wasn’t known as the Ear-Ripper for nothing.
I drank several bottles of wine and passed out only to have him wake me.
“You are American?”
“Yes.”
“My dream is to drive the Cannonball rally race with my Mercedes. How would you like to be my co-pilot.”
I figured that legendary race lasted 20 hours. “Can I do drugs?”
“No drugs.”
“Okay.” No wasn’t a word Kali liked to hear and several hours later the guests filtered out of the restaurant into the grey dawn along the Alstersee and everyone planned to be very far away for Kali’s 28th birthday.
I was in Paris.
Living on baguettes and cheese.
1982 and in 2007 I’m only 140 kilometers from the 21st Century’s most lavish spread.
Tonight I’ll be cook myself a cheeseburger to be washed down by a cheap chardonnay.
I am extremely loso or low class.
