My nephew in the UK said he liked Muse, so I picked a bootleg copy of BLACK HOLES AND REVELATIONS at the temple market. $2.60 instead of $21.99 at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square. Not counting tax. Their ABSOLUTION CD was #1 the UK and France too.
At home I put on BLACK HOLES AND REVELATIONS. The first song TAKE A BOW sounded like VERVE meets ELO. This is #1 material?
After three seconds of BLACK HOLES AND REVELATIONS I fast-forwarded through the rest of the CD in less than a minute. Stadium sensitive rock with meaningless lyrics. U2 at its insipid bests.
I thought I might be wrong and gave them a second listen.
The music was more annoying than the first time, mostly because I could recognize their ambition to play in front of 70,000 fans paying $50 each in $20 Muse tee-shirts. I flipped the CD and the flyer notes into the swamp behind my house.
I kept the jewel box for my Al Green’s Greatest Hits.
Take me to the river.
