Erica Jong immortalized sex in an airplane in her 1973 novel FEAR OF FLYING.
The book sold 12 million copies.
Airline stewardesses were sexual icons.
Young, thin, and friendly.
The skies were our friends.
All changed after 9/11 and recently a couple was arrested for violating the Patriot Act by being a little too intimate for the Puritanism of a Southwest airline hostess.
A middle-aged man and woman were snuggling in a manner unbecoming to security minded passengers. The man was pressing his face to the woman’s vagina and was seen smiling when he came up for air. The stewardess asked them to stop and the man threatened her with ‘serious consequences’ if she didn’t leave them alone.
The pilot radioed ahead and the couple was arrested in Raleigh for obstructing a stewardess.
They are now facing 20 years for being too affectionate during a time of war.
Maybe they could be stoned for an example.
UPDATE
Ralph Fiennes supposedly joined the mile-high club with a Quantas stewardess on a Bombay-flight. 35,000 feet is a little more than a mile. Actually it’s almost seven times more than a mile. No one ever said Erica Jong was an aeronautic specialist.
Fiennes and the stewardess retreated to the washroom for an extended liaison. They reputedly took off their clothes. Which makes no sense to me. Then again maybe with movie stars it’s all about romance.
