You would think somoene in congress would be smarter, however there’s that great scene from CITIZEN KANE when Kane is confronted about his adultery and the crooked politician offers him an out. Kane refuses and the crooked politican says, “Mr Kane, I thought you were a smart man, but this is obviously a lesson you’re going to have to learn more than once.”

Foley joins the rank of infamous members of Congress who have suffered lapse of moral fortitude.

League of Disgrace

Rep. Wilbur Mills (D-Ark.) Oct. 9, 1974 was stopped for speeding well after midnight near the Jefferson Memorial at 2 a.m. Annabella Battistella – a stripper jumped out of his car and leapt into the Potomac River tidal basin. This act of impropriety was forgiven by his constituency until he appeared on stage with his mistress. Drunk. He did not seek another term.

Rep. Wayne Hays (D-Ohio) May 23, 1976. His secretary for the House Administration Committee declares to the Washington Post, “I can’t type, I can’t file, I can’t  even answer the phone.” and admits her job was mainly to have sex with Hays. said the main responsibility of her $14,000-a-year job was to have sex with Hays. During he re-election campaign a car-wash manager/bartender received more than 39 percent of the vote. Hays was history.
 
Rep. John Young (D-Tex.) also fell to the allures of his secretary, who told the NY Times that the congressman increased her salary after submitting to his sexual offers. He was re-elected without a problem.
Rep. Allan Howe (D-Utah) on June 13, 1976 was sanred in Salt Lake City on charges of soliciting two policewomen posing as prostitutes. Mormons voted him out. Polygamy is one thing. Buying sex is another.

Rep. Fred Richmond (D-N.Y.) in April 1978 was arrested in Washington for soliciting sex from a 16-year-old boy. he apologized for this incident and was re-elected by New York voters, until he was busted for pot.

Finally a republican show the GP is human.

Rep. Jon Hinson (R-Miss.) on Aug. 8, 1980 stunned voters by admitting to sex acts at a gay swish joint in Virginia. he was re-elected by a forgiving electorate, but busted later on sodomy charges in the infamous Capitol tea room. he came out later. 

Rep. Robert Bauman (R-Md.) on Oct. 3, 1980 pleaded innocent to a charge that he committed oral sodomy on a teenage boy in Washington. Maryland votes were not as forgiving as Virginia.

Rep. Thomas Evans (R-Del.) stupidly reported to a magazine that he, Tom Railsback (R-Ill.) and Dan Quayle (R-Ind.) – shared a cottage during a 1980 vacation in Florida with Paula Parkinson, a lobbyist who later posed for Playboy magazine. her persuasiveness swayed their vote against federal crop-insurance legislation. Railsback and Quayle denied having sex with her. His voters didn’t forgive him too. Quayle became Vice President.

Reps. Dan Crane (R-Ill.) and Gerry Studds (D-Mass.) on July 14, 1983 were guilty of sexual relationships with teenage congressional pages – Crane with a 17-year-old female in 1980, Studds with a 17-year-old male in 1973.  Newt Gingrich a rumored gay (check out that haircut) argued they should be expelled and his appeal to the Log Cabin Republicans. They were censured, but Crane was ousted by his electorate. Mass voters stayed with studds who admitted he was a queer.

Rep. Ernie Konnyu (R-Calif.) sexually harassed aidesand was replaced by the GOP.

Sen. Brock Adams (D-Wash.) Sept. 27, 1988 date-raped the daughter of a friend. He had a hsitory of this crime and was asked to step down.

Rep. Jim Bates (D-Calif.) also accosted aides although the allegations were attributed to a smear campaign by the GOP. he lsot to Duke Cunningham who is now serving time for corruption in connection the the Abramnoff investigation.
Rep. Donald “Buz” Lukens (R-Ohio) was guilty of paying for sex with an under-aged girl. He refused to resign until he was caught fondling an elvator operator in the Capitol building.

Rep. Gus Savage (D-Ill.) on July 19, 1989 was report to ahve fondled  a Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire. He survived this allegation and was re-elected to anotehr term. 

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) on Aug. 25, 1989 admits having paid for sex with a male. confirmed that he hired Steve Gobie, a male prostitute. He was otracized by the GOP but has won re-election ever since.

So no throwing stones unless you are without sin.
